Day 10

Day 10

Today we went to San Francisco.  The weather was awesome, it was in the 60's and overcast.  When we got into the city we found parking and walked downtown.  When we got to Hyde St. Pier we looked at the old boats docked there.  There were also seals in the Marina which was cool to see and hear.  We walked over to the Maritime National Historic park pier where you can see Alcatraz and Golden Gate bridge.  We then walked over to the Ghirardelli Square to grab some lunch at Lori's Diner.  For dessert we got a brownie Sundae from the Ghirardelli shop.  We then headed back to the car, where we realized parking is crazy expensive 28.00 expensive.  When we left to parking garage we drove towards the Golden Gate bridge because we just had to drive across it.  We stopped our day in Red Bluff, CA. Tomorrow we will head to The Redwood National Park.

Day 9

Day 9

Today we went to Yosemite National Park.  We set out this morning driving through more twisty and winding roads hanging over the side of a mountain to get to the park.  When we got to the park we got a map and realized the park is huge.  We drove through the park and the views are amazing.  We decided to get to the hotel early today to try to get some laundry done and relax in the pool for a little while. Then get some rest and get ready for tomorrow.

Day 8

Day 8

We set out to day to explore Sequoia National Park.  After a quick gas stop and Walmart again to get a few things, we headed to the park.  The park was awesome.  Basically you take a 30+ mile scenic, twisty, palm sweating drive up the side of a mountain.  It was the kinda road you see on a rally race, except top speed is 30mph.  Crazy as the drive was it was absolutely amazing scenery.  The trees are massive! The park took most of the day so The daily miles were only 235.7, and we got to our hotel fairly early. We figured we could do our laundry with our extra time, WRONG! The hotel said it had a washer and dryer, but the actually don't. Well there goes that plan. Guess we will have to do laundry another day. Guess we will call it a night and see what tomorrow brings.

Day7

Day7
Day 7 was the big day.  We left our hotel and had to find breakfast.  The hotels lobby was crammed full of people who were apparently ok with eating toast and cookies for breakfast.  We found some food and stopped by Walmart to get a few things.  We then hit the road headed for Los Angeles.  The closer we got to LA the more crazy traffic got. We drove 252.9 miles today, and probably 100 of it was in 5 lanes of stop and go traffic.  We walked around downtown LA for a little while looking at all the stars and hand prints.  That was neat to see, the sidewalk of stars seemed to go on forever.  When then grab some lunch at Mels Drive Inn Diner, its made to look like and old school diner.  After lunch we headed for Santa Monica Pier.  More stop and go traffic but we finally made it.  We found parking, and walked over to the pier.  When decided to ride the Ferris wheel, which at the top you can see everything.  It was an awesome view from up there.  After the Ferris wheel we headed for the water and put our feet in the Pacific Ocean, which for me was a bucket list item that I can now check off. We walked around for a little while longer and got some ice cream and headed back for the car.  We ended our days journey in Bakersfield, California. We are gonna get some rest and get ready for tomorrow.

Day6

Day6
Today we set out with a main goal of Las Vegas.  After leaving the hotel I realized I forgot to reset the trip odometer so daily miles are 279.6 + 19 = 298.6, which seems low because we spent most of the day taking in the sights. At the the Nevada line we pulled over and got a picture of the sign.  We decided to check out the Hoover Dam which was right there, the dam was an amazing sight.  We walked out the bridge to see it and take pictures.  We also decide to drive across it.  We then headed for Las Vegas.  Our first stop was the Las Vegas sign.  We had lunch at Hard rock cafe.  After lunch we went next door to the Hotel/Casino looked around and played some slots.  When we left the Casino we drove over to Caesars Palace where we walked around and went to the Casino there.  After spending some time roaming Las Vegas we headed out. We reached the California line, and stopped for a picture. Also we saw zzyzx rd, which only some people will get and was pretty cool.  We called it a day when we reached Barstow, California.

Day5

Day5 -
We started the day eating breakfast at the hotel.  When we set off for the day the Arizona state line was our first stop.  We picked up some information and got a picture of the sign and got back on the road. Our second stop was the Petrified Forrest National park.  It was very fascinating to see logs that had been transformed into crystal like formations.  The logs and pieces were scattered all of the place. It was a really cool sight to see.  After that we hit the road again, stopping to get gas along the way and make some sandwiches for lunch.  Our next stop was the Grand Canyon.  What a fantastic view.  This was my first time to the Grand Canyon and it is amazing. You see pictures of it and it looks big, but until you actually see it you cant grasp how huge it is. It was a great experience. We ended our day in Kingman, Arizona after 2 parks and 470 miles of driving we are pooped.  Time for some rest so we can get back at it tomorrow.

Day4

Day 4 - Today we drove 614.4 miles.  Today's events included a few Bucket list things for me.  For whatever reason, for as long I can remember, if anyone ever asked me of a place where I always wanted to go, I would always say Texas.  Today, that dream became reality.  Also in Texas was another item on the list...the Cadillac ranch.  Before heading over, we stopped first at a Wal-Mart to get a few food items and cans of spray paint.  When we got to Cadillac ranch, it was amazing to see 10 cars nose down in the dirt covered in paint.  The paint was so thick I am not sure if there was even metal underneath.   These cars were in rough shape, too.  Either way it was an awesome experience. We continued our journey -  adding 2 more states to our list of states Geocached, Texas and New Mexico.  We finally called it quits for the day in West Gallup, New Mexico. Not exactly the miles we wanted to today but it will have to do.

Day 3

Day 3:  Pretty much just a driving day. We drove 645.9 miles.  The hero of the day is the CRV.  It took a literal pounding.  RT40's speed limit is 70mph and has a very rough driving surface.  Between the pot holes, cracks, and uneven pavement I felt bad for the car. Luckily nothing  broke severely (knock on wood), though it did get a few battle wounds. The tabs that hold the heat shield on the exhaust broke so it's rattling and a truck kicked up a rock and put another crack in the windshield.  Other than that, we stopped at a Arkansas rest stop to have sandwiches for lunch.  Before we left Arkansas we pulled off to find a Geocache so we can add that state to our list.  We also stopped at the Oklahoma Welcome center to find a Geocache so we can also add that to our list of states cached.  When we got to Oklahoma City we stopped at a Steak and Shake for dinner. We have never been to a Steak and Shake before...it was pretty tasty.  We ended our days journey in Clinton, Oklahoma where we will call the Econo Lodge home for the night.
